BigBearLakeandBeyond is a constantly growing web site, focused on the back roads of two countries – America and Australia – a kinship so close that we could be family.
“It’s not necessarily the grand cities of Europe that interest me (not that I’d pass up a trip to any one of them); they seem too vast and inscrutable to get to know in a mere week or two, not to mention how overdone they are already. It’s the overlooked destinations on the back roads; places like Hubbell Trading Post, still an authentic part of the Navajo Nation, with a collection on western art to rival anything in Santa Fe; or the worlds’ largest sand island – Fraser Island – accessible only by 4WD and home to towering giants; satinay, blackbutt and quondong (all thriving in sand) and strangely, seldom visited, even by Australians. This is what tickles me; exploring the under-prized and the under-priced, the land beyond the teeming masses.”
From her home base in Big Bear Lake, Maggie Kielpinski is under no illusions: “these could quite possibly be the most tedious travel tales ever produced, but hopefully they are sufficiently entertaining enough for a short arm-chair journey. So, they’re out there. Whether your interests lie in colorful characters like Jay Gammons, or in the picturesque towns of Bisbee, Arizona or laid back and lucky Brisbane, we hope to get you off the couch and into motion or as Boyd Matson says “take a few chances, get off the tour bus.” Find the magic in the common-place.
